Many older Americans enter their retirement years with good oral health due to a lifetime of employer-sponsored dental benefits. They are often surprised to learn that traditional Medicare only provides coverage for limited hospital-based oral surgeries required in conjunction with other treatments. Older adults who did not benefit from access to employer-based coverage during their working years find themselves in later life with oral health care needs and no means of financing that care. Almost 70 percent of Americans age 65 and older do not have dental coverage.
