Grant Project Title
Educating State Policymakers on Oral Health Policy Options
Grantee Address

National Conference of State Legislatures
7700 East First Place
Denver, CO
United States

This investment supports the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) to develop new resources, learning, and convening opportunities for state legislators and legislative staff designed to increase their awareness of oral health and policy opportunities adopted by other states. As an organization, NCSL represents all 7,383 state legislators and nearly 3,000 legislative staff. Leveraging its networks, NCSL will be able to transfer information about the importance of oral health, provide examples of effective policies and programs that improve the oral health of gap populations, and bring together important stakeholders with the authority to create progress in this field. The specific policy topic to be discussed will be determined in partnership with NCSL and the grants team and is based on interest from NCSL members and emerging issues in oral health. In 2021, the specific vehicles are as follows: a webinar on oral health state level health policy options prior to the 2022 legislative session – likely to include oral health equity; the integration of oral health into NCSL convenings, specifically the Maternal and Child Health State Policy Collaborative and its annual Legislative Summit (likely virtual in 2021); a comprehensive LegisBrief or policy snapshot to be shared with members; and a blog, magazine article or podcast on oral health, allowing them to respond to emerging trends. $50,500 will be used to support personnel time necessary for the implementation of this work, meeting expenses associated with convening legislators/legislative staff, communications and marketing costs to develop and disperse materials, and administrative costs that support the execution of the proposed work.
