Disease Management Series

The Disease Management series consists of 30 to 40 minute online learning modules including an Overview module. Each module was designed to promote and increase prevention-focused thinking about oral health care. This information presented might be considered a refresher about some of the ways that you can implement the prevention-focused model for the management of dental caries and periodontal disease in your practice.

Course Overview

This Course Overview Module provides an overview of the modules in the Disease Management Series. Each module was designed to get you thinking in a new way about some already familiar subjects with an emphasis on a prevention-focused model for the prevention and management of dental caries.

Module 1: Implementing a Culture of Disease Management

This module will take a look at Implementing a Culture of Disease Management. You will learn about making the transition from a traditional dental practice to a prevention-focused practice.

Module 2: Caries as a Chronic Disease

This module will take a look at Caries as a Chronic Disease. You will learn more about the causes, stages and proliferation of dental caries, with an emphasis on the risk factors for the disease and the protective factors that can prevent it.

Module 3: Caries Risk Assessment

This module will take a look at Caries Risk Assessment. You'll learn about risk assessment and disease management and how you can identify and explain risk factors and disease indicators for different age groups.

Module 4: Caries Management by Risk Assessment: CAMBRA

In this module you will take a look at Caries Management by Risk Assessment (CAMBRA). You'll gain a deeper understanding of one risk assessment system known as Caries Management by Risk Assessment, or CAMBRA. We'll cover what you need to know about CAMBRA and the difference between CAMBRA and traditional care. You'll also learn how to access established CAMBRA support networks.

Module 5: Dental Caries Management: Perinatal

This module will take a look at Dental Caries Management: Perinatal. You'll see how you can apply the preventive approach to perinatal oral health care. We will cover the current science, policies, clinical guidelines, and opportunities for providing improved care.

Module 6: Dental Caries Management: Newborn to Age 5

This module will take a look at Dental Caries Management: Newborn to Age 5. You’ll learn about specialized disease management of dental caries for infants and toddlers, newborn to age five.

Module 7: Dental Caries Management: Age 6 through Adult

This module will take a look at Dental Caries Management: Age 6 through Adult. You'll learn about dental caries risk assessment and disease management for patients age 6 through adult. 

Module 8: Interim Therapeutic Restoration

This module will take a look at Interim Therapeutic Restoration, or ITR. You’ll learn how this restorative technique stabilizes active lesions so that caries does not continue to progress. Taking a look at the three stages of disease and corresponding levels of prevention will help you identify how ITR can help individual patients. You’ll even see the steps involved in performing ITR. Whether you’ve heard of ITR before or not, you’ll come away from this module with a better understanding of its benefits and how it might fit into your practice.
