State of Oral Health Equity in America 2024

Key Findings from the 2024 Survey

CareQuest Institute’s annual State of Oral Health Equity in America survey is the largest nationally representative survey focused on adults’ attitudes, experiences, and behaviors related to oral health. The 2024 survey is our largest yet, gathering responses from more than 9,000 adults in the US.

This infographic highlights some initial key findings. A comprehensive report with additional findings will follow shortly, and future reports will take a deeper dive into specific outcomes and experiences.

Dental Anxiety and Oral Health in American Indian and Alaska Natives

This peer-reviewed article in the Journal of Public Health Dentistry, co-authored by researchers from CareQuest Institute and the University of Colorado and Marquette University Schools of Dentistry, explores associations between dental distrust, dental fear and anxiety, and oral health outcomes in American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) adults.

As we began creating self-paced courses for CareQuest Institute, we took a closer look at terminology in oral health care — terms like “value-based payment,” “fee-for-service,” “interoperability,” and “care coordination.” One phrase continued to give us pause and generate thoughtful discussion: social determinants of health.

A Seat at the Table: Improving Oral Health in Wisconsin

“If they had a job, they could get real insurance and afford to get their teeth fixed.” 

“People are lazy if they have state insurance. They’re not as educated as others.” 

“Anyone could go to the dentist if they wanted to. They are choosing not to or not prioritizing it.” 

These are common perceptions about patients who struggle to access oral health care — a frequent topic during Wisconsin Medical-Dental Integration (MDI) Advisory Council quarterly meetings.
