A Collaborative Conversation: How to Elevate Black Voices in Oral Health Care

February 28, 2024

From 2005 to 2020, the percentage of US dentists who identify as Black has stayed around 3.8%

“The stagnant nature of this percentage should give us all pause,” said Eleanor Fleming, PhD, DDS, MPH. “This disparity is why having conversations like this around Black dentists, Black workforce, and issues related to the Black community are important for those of us who work in oral health.”

CareQuest Institute Awards $1.25 Million in Grant Funding for Projects Focused on Disability Inclusion and Justice in Oral Health

February 28, 2024

CareQuest Institute awarded $1.25 million in funding to 10 organizations selected for their Disability Inclusion and Justice in Oral Health Request for Proposals (RFP). Each organization received $125,000 to fulfill work to address systemic barriers to oral health — including access to oral health — for people with disabilities.

Kansas Reflector: Expansion of Medicaid Adult Dental Benefits in Kansas a Win For All

February 8, 2024

"Kansas joins several states nationwide in taking crucial steps toward increasing access to oral health care. According to CareQuest Institute for Oral Health’s recently updated Medicaid Adult Dental Coverage Checker, which highlights the progress advocates and policymakers have made to strengthen adult dental coverage in the past few years, eight states now offer extensive Medicaid adult dental benefits."

The Hour of Need: Productivity Time Lost Due to Urgent Oral Health Needs 

Adults in the US miss more than 243 million hours of productivity time each year due to oral health problems, according to findings from CareQuest Institute’s State of Oral Health Equity in America survey. Respondents’ lost productivity time was due to their own oral health problems, or oral health problems in children and other adults in their care.

  • The prevalence of early childhood caries in American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities is three times higher than for white children.
  • Black and AI/AN women are 2.9 and 2.5 times more likely, respectively, to die from pregnancy-related causes than non-Hispanic white women.
  • There is growing evidence that individuals who use electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are at a higher risk for dental caries.
